Big inning lifts Captains over Hot Rods
Lefthanded starter Shawn Morimando made his 2012 season debut with the Captains. Morimando was selected in the 19thround of the 2011 draft from Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia.
Bowling Green jumped on the scoreboard early, scoring two runs in the first. Second baseman Ryan Brett walked to lead off the game. He then stole second and advanced to third on a balk by Morimando. Catcher Matt Rice scored Brett with a sacrifice fly to center field. Designated hitter Jeff Malm followed with his third home run of the year, a solo shot to right field.
The Hot Rods would maintain their two-run lead until the Captains put a five spot on the board in the fifth to take the lead. First baseman Jerrud Sabourin and third baseman Leonardo Castillo had back to back singles to leadoff. Second baseman Robel Garcia loaded the bases with a single after a strikeout. Shortstop Francisco Lindor drove in Sabourin with a single to left. Centerfielder Bryson Myles drove in Castillo with a sacrifice fly.
Roberto Gomez’s (1-1, 4.55 ERA) day was over after 4.2 innings. He allowed four runs on five hits. He struck out six and walked two. Stayton Thomas relieved Gomez in the inning.
Designated hitter Alex Monsalve rudely welcomed Thomas by lining a double to left field to drive in Garcia, his 15thRBI of the year. Right fielder Jordan Smith hit a two-run single to score Lindor and Monsalve.
Cole Cook (1-1, 4.82 ERA) relieved Morimando and pitched three scoreless innings. He only allowed two hits and he struck out one batter.
The Captains added an insurance run in the ninth inning. Garcia singled but was erased on a force out by Lindor. Lindor stole his team leading eleventh base and moved to third on a wild pitch from reliever Justin Woodall. Monsalve hit his second double of the game to score Lindor.
Grant Sides pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the year, as he allowed only one hit and two walks.
The Captains pounded out 12 hits and were led by Monsalve’s three hits and two RBI’s. Castillo, Garcia and Lindor each had two hits apiece.
The Captains continue the road trip on Monday night in Bowling Green, Kentucky. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35pm. Lake County will send RHP Felix Sterling (1-0, 3.56) to the hill against RHP Jake Floethe (3-1, 4.45) for the Hot Rods.
