6/8: Captains explode late, win 14-6

DAYTON – The Lake County Captains (29-31) scored ten runs in the late innings to defeat the Dayton Dragons (25-36) by a score of 14-6 and avoid the sweep on Friday night at Fifth Third Field. The win leaves Lake County 3.5 games out of the wild-card spot with nine games left.

Dayton scored two runs in the first inning off of Captains’ starter Felix
Sterling (3-5, 5.72 ERA). Third baseman Joe Terry reached on a two out fielding error by Captains shortstop Francisco Lindor. Terry stole second base and came around to score after a two run homerun by designated hitter Steve Selsky. Selsky’s second homerun of the year gave Dayton a
2-0 lead.

Dayton starter Jacob Johnson gave up four runs in the second inning.
First baseman Jerrud Sabourin was hit by a pitch and catcher Alex Lavisky walked. Left fielder Todd Hankins doubled home Sabourin. After two groundouts, second baseman Robel Garcia drove home Lavisky and Hankins to give Lake County its first lead. Garcia scored on a fielding error during centerfielder Luigi Rodriguez’s at-bat.

Sterling allowed a solo homerun in the bottom of the third inning to catcher Yovan Gonzalez. Gonzalez’s homer cut the lead to 4-3.

Dayton clawed back to a lead with a three run fourth inning. Second baseman Ryan Wright singled and stole second base with two outs. Left fielder Juan Silva tied the ballgame with a RBI single to right field, scoring Wright. Gonzalez drove home Silva for his second RBI of the night. A passed ball by Lavisky allowed Gonzalez to advance. Shortstop Juan Perez singled up the middle to plate Gonzalez. Dayton led 6-4 after four innings.

Both starters lasted six innings on the mound. Johnson allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits. He walked two, hit a batter and struck out four batters. Reliever Dan Jensen (3-1, 5.63) followed Johnson to the mound in the seventh inning.

Jensen had a forgettable outing on Friday night. With one out in the seventh, Rodriguez and Lindor hit back to back singles. Right fielder Jordan Smith laced his eleventh double of the year down the left field line, plating Rodriguez. Sabourin scored Lindor on a groundout to second base. Lavisky reached on a throwing error by Terry, allowing Smith to score.

Cole Cook relieved Sterling for the seventh inning. Sterling threw six innings to get the win, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits. He walked three, hit one batter and struck out two batters. Sterling surrendered two homeruns, accounting for three runs. Cook allowed one hit in his one inning of work.

Jensen stayed in the game for the eighth inning. Third baseman Leonardo Castillo and designated hitter Zach MacPhee singled
to start the inning. Garcia attempted a sacrifice bunt, but erased Castillo as the lead runner. Rodriguez loaded the bases with
an infield single. Smith cleared the bases with his second double of the night. MacPhee, Garcia and Rodriguez all scored on the play. Smith scored on an error by the pitcher Jensen, allowing Sabourin to advance to second. Lavisky singled home Sabourin to end Jensen’s night.

El’Hajj Muhammad replaced Jensen with two outs. Muhammad walked Hankins and gave up a double to Castillo, plating Lavisky and Hankins. Muhammad allowed one run on two hits in his 1.1 innings of work. He walked two and struck out one.

Jensen took the loss and blew a save, allowing nine runs (five earned) on eight hits. He struck out two in 1.2 innings of work.

Grant Sides and Francisco Valera both threw perfect innings in the eighth and ninth, respectively. Sides struck out the side and
Valera struck out one.

Lake County pounded out 15 hits on the night. Luigi Rodriguez and Todd Hankins added three hits each. Everyone in the lineup reached base at one point tonight.

The Lake County Captains will travel to Lansing, Michigan for a three game series with Eastern Division leading Lansing Lugnuts. Lake County will send LHP Elvis Araujo (2-4, 3.02) to the mound to face RHP Marcus Walden (4-1, 2.70) for Lansing. First pitch from Cooley Law School Stadium is set for 7:05 PM.
