EASTLAKE, OH- The Lake County Captains (17-33) used two home runs in the first three innings to build a 5-0 lead en route to a 6-1 win on Thursday afternoon. Lake County won the final two games of the series to win their fourth series of the year.
Lake County jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning. Right fielder Anthony Santander led off with a single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch before catcher Eric Haase launched a two-run home run to right field, his fifth home run of the year.
Second baseman Yhoxian Medina, who joined the roster before the game, singled in his first at-bat. A passed ball allowed Medina to go all the way to third before third baseman Erik Gonzalez singled him home. Floro’s second wild pitch moved Gonzalez up ninety feet. Shortstop Dorssys Paulino drove in Gonzalez for his 15th run with a single to left field.
Center fielder Logan Vick hit his second home run of the year to start the third inning, adding a run to the Captains’ lead.
Vick spoke about his home run pitch and the last few games. “It was a fastball that was middle-in.,” he said. “We have had a lot of energy as a team. We know the talent is there but it took a while to develop. Now we are learning the roles and get going.”
Bowling Green got on the board in the fifth inning. Catcher Justin O’Conner singled and second baseman Tommy Coyle walked to begin the frame. Shortstop Leonardo Reginatto singled home O’Conner to cut the lead to 5-1.
The Captains gained a run back in the bottom half of the fifth. Paulino doubled with one out in the inning. He went to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.
Merritt’s day was over after six innings. He allowed one run on four hits to win his third game of the year. He walked one and struck out five. Merritt has allowed one run or less in five of his 10 starts this year. Felix Sterling entered for the seventh inning.
Floro allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits in six innings for his second straight loss. He did not walk a batter and he fanned five batters. Jose Molina relieved Floro with two one-hit innings.
Sterling threw a scoreless seventh inning and Jack Wagoner threw two scoreless to run his consecutive scoreless streak to 12 innings.
On the wire to wire win, Tucker said “It was an all-around better game for us. It was good to link this one to yesterday’s walk-off win. Merritt worked well to get out of jams early so we didn’t fall behind early.”
The Captains outhit the Hot Rods 9-6 with Paulino, Vick and Medina all having two hits each. Haase led the team with two RBI.
The Captains will travel to Dayton, Ohio for a four-game set with the Dayton Dragons on Friday night. RHP Mason Radeke will make his 2013 debut for the Captains as he will face LHP Ismael Guillon (1-5, 7.98 ERA) for the Dragons. First pitch is set for 7:07 PM from Fifth Third Field.
