SOUTH BEND, IN- The South Bend Silver Hawks (42-17) used a four-run eighth inning to take a late 7-4 lead to sweep the Lake County Captains (20-38) on Friday night. Lake County has now lost four straight.
The Captains opened the game with three extra-base hits. Second baseman Yhoxian Medina, making his first appearance in the leadoff spot, tripled to right field. Shortstop Dorssys Paulino followed with a RBI triple to center field. Centerfielder Logan Vickthen lined a RBI double to right field, scoring Paulino. A wild pitch by Winkler and a throwing error by catcher Roidany Aguila allowed Vick to come home and Lake County was suddenly staked to a 3-0 lead after a half inning.
South Bend gained back a run in the bottom half of the first. Second baseman Fidel Pena led off with a walk. Pena stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Right fielder Socrates Brito brought Pena home with a groundout to short for his 25th RBI of the year.
Baker and Winkler exchanged zeroes until the sixth inning when South Bend tied the game at three.
Centerfielder Breland Almadova opened the sixth with a walk. Brito drove a triple to center field, plating Almadova. Third baseman Brandon Drury tied the game with a RBI double. Manager Scooter Tucker made the call to the bullpen to summon Felix Sterling. Sterling worked around a passed ball and an intentional walk to keep the game knotted at three.
Baker earned a no-decision with three runs on three hits in five plus innings. He walked four and struck out two.
Winkler earned a no-decision as well with six innings of three-run baseball. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out one. Will Locante entered for the seventh.
Locante was quite erratic as he walked third baseman Leo Castillo to open the seventh. Two wild pitches moved Castillo all the way to third. Left fielder Aaron Siliga walked before Locante’s night was over. Thomas Brendelentered into the game with two on and one out.
One more wild pitch moved Siliga up ninety feet before Medina brought Castillo home with a sacrifice fly to take a 4-3 lead.
Locante allowed one run and two walks in one third of an inning.
Jack Wagoner followed Sterling’s scoreless sixth inning with a scoreless seventh inning but gave up a four spot in the eighth inning.
Two walks and a single loaded the bases to open the eighth for the Silver Hawks. Following a fielder’s choice at home, a bases loaded walk by shortstop Pedro Ruiz tied the game. Pena singled home a run before Almadova opened the lead with a two-run single to left. Louis Head relieved Wagoner as he retired the final batter. South Bend ended the inning with a 7-4 lead.
Wagoner took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in one and two thirds innings. He walked three and fanned four.
Enrique Burgos picked up his fourth save with a perfect ninth inning.
Brendel got his second win of the year, with one and two thirds of shutout ball.
South Bend outhit Lake County 7-6. The top of the Captains lineup (Medina, Paulino and Vick) accounted for three hits, all extra base hits.
The Captains will return home to Classic Park for a three-game series starting on Saturday night. RHP Luis Dejesus (1-6, 6.87 ERA) will take the ball for Lake County as he will be opposed by RHP Reinaldo Lopez (2-3, 3.02 ERA) for the Hot Rods. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
