FORT WAYNE, IN- The Lake County Captains (21-41) used a season-high 10 extra base hits on Wednesday night to break two different streaks while defeating the Fort Wayne TinCaps (40-24) by a final score of 11-0. Lake County snapped a seven-game losing streak while Fort Wayne broke a nine-game winning streak.
Rodriguez worked around two doubles and two walks to keep the game scoreless through three innings.
Catcher Richard Stock broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a solo home run to right field, his third of the season.
A seven-run fifth inning propelled Lake County an 8-0 lead while also sending Rodriguez to the showers. Left fielder Leo Castillo led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a RBI single by third baseman Erik Gonzalez. Following a single and a fly out, first baseman Joe Sever launched a three-run home run to left field. A single and a fielding error by shortstop Maxx Tissenbaum placed two men on base with designated hitter Jeremy Lucas coming to the plate. Lucas plated two runs with a triple to left field.
Rodriguez’s night was over after four and two thirds innings. He allowed five earned runs (eight runs overall) on nine hits as he took the loss. He walked two and struck out one. Mathew Chabot entered in relief.
The second fielding error by Tissenbaum brought Lucas home before a strikeout to end the inning.
Gonzalez led off the sixth inning with his fourth home run of the year to push the lead to 9-0 after six innings.
Baker worked into the seventh inning before giving way to reliever Josh Martin. He picked up his second win of the season with six and two thirds scoreless innings, allowing two hits and four walks. He struck out four batters.
Castillo hit his fourth home run of the year to begin the eighth inning. Gonzalez struck out swinging but moved all the way to third base on a throwing error by TinCaps’ catcher Rodney Daal. Shortstop Dorssys Paulino doubled home Gonzalez to end the scoring at 11-0.
Chabot allowed two earned runs (three runs) on three hits in three and one third innings. He struck out five. Michael Kelly took the ball for the ninth inning.
Kelly worked around a double to pitch a scoreless ninth.
Martin threw one and one third innings of shutout baseball while all-star Louis Head threw a scoreless ninth as Lake County completed their fourth shutout of the year with five hits allowed.
The Captains had 13 hits on the night including 10 extra base hits. They had five doubles, one triple and four home runs. Gonzalez and Paulino had three hits apiece and two others added two hits.
Lake County will wrap up the final road trip of the first half on Thursday. The Captains will start RHP Jake Sisco (2-5, 3.42) and Fort Wayne will counter with RHP Walker Weickel (1-3, 5.60). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Parkview Field.
