DAYTON,OH- The Lake County Captains (1-0) used a season-high five home runs and a season-high seven innings from Dylan Baker to propel to a 11-3 win over the Dayton Dragons (0-1) on Thursday night to open the second half of the Midwest League season.
Dylan Baker made the start for Lake County as he took on right-hander Nick Travieso for the Dragons.
The Captains broke through with a run in the first inning. Centerfielder Logan Vick plated shortstop Dorssys Paulino with a RBI double to center field.
Three home runs accounted five runs in the second inning as the Captains continued to build an early 6-0 lead. Catcher Eric Haase opened the frame with a solo shot, his eighth of the year. Following a single and a walk, third baseman Erik Gonzalez brought both runners home with a three-run home run to center field. Two batters later, Vick hit a solo bomb of his own, his third of the campaign. The three roundtrippers in the inning were a new season best.
Travieso exited the game after two innings. He took the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits, including the three homers. Joel Bender entered the game, hoping for a better result.
Four straight singles greeted Bender including a RBI knock by designated hitter Jeremy Lucas. The second run of the third inning came on a double play ball by second baseman Yhoxian Medina. Lake County built a 8-0 lead through two and a half innings.
Paulino hit his second homerun of the year and second in back-to-back games in the sixth to add another run to the 9-0 lead.
Bender gave up three runs in four innings of relief work on six hits to go along with two walks and four strikeouts. Jesus Adames was next to the mound in the seventh inning.
Dayton broke the shutout in the seventh inning with two runs. A single and a throwing error by Paulino put two in scoring position and two out. Third baseman Tanner Rahier brought in both with a single to center field.
Baker won his third game of the year with seven strong innings. He scattered five hits while allowing two unearned runs and striking out six. Benny Suarez threw a scoreless eighth inning.
Adames threw two perfect innings before turning the ball to Wandy Peralta for the ninth.
Haase hit his second dinger of the game and ninth overall to open the lead to 11-2. The homerun was a two-run shot.
Peralta allowed two runs on one hit and one walk in one inning.
DJ Brown took the mound to finish the blowout win. He gave up a solo shot to centerfielder Junior Arias in the ninth but struck out the side.
The Captains had 15 hits on the night, including three each from Paulino, Vick and Haase. After the game, Gonzalez, Vick and Haase are tied with 28 RBI’s apiece.
The three game series will continue on Friday night. The Captains will start RHP Luis Dejesus (1-7,6.38) and the Dragons will counter with Jackson Stephens (0-0,0.00), who will be making his first start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 PM.
