NILES, OH- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (5-6) used a two-hit shutout to manage a split of the short two-game series against the State College Spikes (6-4) on Thursday night. The Scrappers won the finale 2-0 at Eastwood Field.
Scrappers lefty Luis Lugo entered Thursday’s game with a great stat line (ten innings, nine hits, two runs, one earned run, one walk, three strikeouts, .90 ERA). He started the game against Nick Petree for the Spikes.
Lugo allowed a one-out single in the first inning and that was the only blemish on his record. Lugo retired the final 14 batters that he faced.
The Scrappers gained a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Shortstop Juan Herrera coaxed a one-out walk and came home on a RBI single by first baseman Manuel Boscan.
Petree was hung with the loss, allowing one run on three hits in four innings of work. Victor De Leon followed with two shutout innings.
Lugo earned his first win of the year, throwing five one-hit innings. He did not walk a batter and he struck out five. Here is Lugo’s updated stat line (15 innings, 10 hits, two runs, one earned run, one walk, eight strikeouts, .60 ERA).
Trevor Frank and Manuel Carmona combined to throw four shutout innings, only allowing one more hit. Carmona earned his second save of the year.
Second baseman Claudio Bautista hit his second home run of the year in the bottom of the eighth to close the scoring at 2-0.
Jeff Rauh allowed one run in two innings for the Spikes to end out the game.
The Scrappers will travel to Williamsport to open a series on Friday night. No pitching matchup has been announced.
