EASTLAKE, OH- The Great Lakes Loons (7-2, 34-45) used a six-run third inning against the Lake County Captains (5-4, 28-48) to win the series finale by a final score of 6-2. The Captains were swept by the Loons after a 5-1 start on the road.
Lake County looked to Jake Sisco in order to right the ship as he faced 16-year old Julio Arias for the Loons.
The Loons put a crooked six on the scoreboard in the third inning by sending 10 men to the plate against Sisco. Six hits, including three doubles accounted for the runs. Left fielder Robbie Garvey and designated hitter Aaron Miller added RBI singles while third baseman Brandon Dixon hit a two-run, two-out single in the frame. First baseman Tyler Ogle and right fielder Jeremy Rathjen had RBI doubles in the frame.
In the bottom of the third inning, Captains second baseman Yhoxian Medina was called out on a checked swing. After the inning, manager Scooter Tucker was ejected by home plate umpire Tim Hromada. That was the first ejection for any member of the Captains staff or roster.
The Captains got a run in the fifth inning on a RBI single by shortstop Dorssys Paulino. Paulino’s base knock ended the night for Arias.
Arias came out of the game, allowing one run on four hits in four and two-thirds innings. He walked three and struck out seven. Luis Meza entered to retire the last batter of the inning.
Sisco took the loss, after throwing five innings on Friday. He gave up six runs on seven hits along with one walk and three strikeouts. DJ Brown took the mound in relief.
Brown and Meza exchanged zeroes until Meza departed prior to the eighth inning.
Meza earned the win with two and one-third innings of shutout ball. He gave up only two hits and struck out three. Crayton Bere made his Loons debut in the eighth.
Brown and Louis Head combined to shutout the Loons on three hits in four innings.
Left fielder Jorge Martinez reached on a one-out double in the ninth. He moved to third on a sacrifice fly and scored when Bere threw a wild pitch. That closed out the scoring in the game.
Bere gave up one run in two innings in his debut.
The Captains had two triples, both with one-out in the second and the eighth innings, but neither runner crossed the plate. Paulino and Medina led the way with two hits each.
The Captains will welcome the Fort Wayne Tincaps to Eastlake on Saturday. LHP Ryan Merritt (4-7, 3.79) will toe the rubber for the Captains against RHP Bryan Rodriguez (1-2, 3.08) for the Tincaps. First pitch on “LanceStrong” night is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
