7/14: Captains snap streak, 4-3

APPLETON, WI- The Lake County Captains (13-10, 36-54) scored three runs in the ninth inning to snap a four game losing streak with some last at-bat winning unlike the first four games of the roadtrip. They defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (10-13, 39-49) by a final score of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. The Captains now are 2-37 when trailing after eight innings.
Both starters exchanged zeroes for the first four and a half innings. The Timber Rattlers roughed up Captains’ starter Robbie Aviles in the bottom of the fifth. Left fielder Victor Roache launched his tenth homer and second in as many days with one out in the inning. After a single, catcher Parker Berberet hits the second home run of the inning, a two-run shot to left field. Aviles was relieved by Jimmy Stokes after Aviles walked a batter.
Aviles threw four and two-thirds innings while allowing three runs on five hits including the two home runs. He walked two and struck out one.
Lake County got on the board in the seventh inning with a run. Centerfielder Logan Vick doubled with one out in the inning. Designated hitter Jeremy Lucas drove Vick home with a RBI single to left field. Lucas has 23 RBI’s for the season.
Jorge Lopez shut down the Captains over a season-high seven innings. Lopez scattered three hits and one run while walking two and fanning four. Taylor Mangum relieved Lopez for the eighth inning.
Stokes threw a perfect two and two-thirds innings before giving way to Benny Suarez to start the eighth inning.
The Captains’ offense came alive in the top of the ninth against Mangum. First baseman Joe Sever, the second batter of the inning, launched a one out bomb to left field. Sever cut the lead to one with his fourth homer of the year. Lucas followed with a single before he moved to second on a wild pitch. Erik Gonzalez entered the game as a pinch-runner for Lucas. Catcher Eric Haase tied the game with a RBI double. The game-winning hit came off the bat of right fielder Anthony Santander. Santander lined a double down the right field line to score Haase.
Suarez won the game with two one-hit, scoreless innings of work while Magnum took the loss. Magnum allowed three runs on six hits in the final two innings of the game.
The Captains outhit the Timber Rattlers 9-6 on Sunday. Vick and Lucas led the way with two-hit games. Five other players had hits in the game.
Lake County will conclude the road trip on Monday with the rubber game with the 2012 Midwest League Champion Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the finale of a three game series. Lake County will start LHP Ryan Merritt (5-8, 3.62) and the Rattlers will counter with RHP Johnny Hellweg (0-0, 0.00). First Pitch will be at 1:05 PM from Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin.
