FORT WAYNE, IN- The Fort Wayne Tincaps (13-24, 56-50) found life in the seventh inning as they scored four runs to take a 4-3 lead over the Lake County Captains (18-20, 41-64). Unlike Tuesday night, the Tincaps held on for a 4-3 win to snap their five-game losing streak. Six of the seven runs in the game were scored with two outs.
Captains’ starter Ryan Merritt only pitched three innings on Wednesday afternoon. He earned a no-decision with three scoreless innings. He scattered four hits, one walk and two balks while he fanned six. Luis Morel made an appearance for the fourth inning.
Both sides threw five scoreless innings to start the game until Lake County jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning. Centerfielder Logan Vick reached on a one-out walk and then stole second base. Following a pop out, designated hitter Richard Stock lined his second single up the middle to score Vick. Two batters later, third baseman Zach MacPhee drove home Stock with another RBI single.
Zach Eflin made the start for Fort Wayne and he made it through six innings. He got a no-decision despite giving up two runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out two.
Ruben Mejia relieved Eflin in the seventh and right fielder Jorge Martinez took his first pitch deep to right field for his third home run of the year. The Captains would load the bases on two singles and an intentional walk with two outs. Mejia got catcher Eric Haase swinging to end the threat.
The Tincaps laced five consecutive hits with two outs to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 4-3 lead. Designated hitter Brian Adams, centerfielder Mallex Smith and left fielder Alberth Martinez each had RBI doubles and second baseman Diego Goris added a RBI single.
The Captains had the tying run at third base with two outs but Trevor Gott entered to strike out Haase to end the game.
Morel was hung with the loss, after allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings of relief. He walked one and struck out two.
The Tincaps bullpen of Mejia, Chris Nunn and Gott combined for three innings of one-run ball. Mejia picked up his third win of the year while Gott saved his third game of the year.
Lake County had ten hits in the game including three two-hit games by Stock, Haase and Martinez. Stock now has a 14 game hitting streak while left fielder LeVon Washington extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
The Captains will be back in action on Thursday night against the Fort Wayne TinCaps in the third game of four game set. The Captains will start RHP Dylan Baker (6-6, 4.08) and Fort Wayne will counter with LHP Max Fried (4-5, 3.95). First Pitch is at 7:00 PM from Classic Park.
