EASTLAKE, OH- The Lake County Captains (21-24, 44-67) used a five run seventh inning to take the series finale from the Great Lakes Loons (26-18, 53-61) on Tuesday afternoon. A three-run homerun by left fielder Jorge Martinez gave the Captains a lead for good.
Dylan Baker made the start for the Captains as he was paired against 16-year-old lefty Julio Arias. Arias pitched a perfect first inning before coming out of the game, turning the ball over to Geoff Brown.
The Loons took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Baker was touched for back-to-back one out singles before centerfielder James Baldwin doubled home one run. The other runner scored after a throwing error by centerfielder LeVon Washington. Baldwin was thrown out attempting to go to third.
Right fielder Jeremy Rathjen hit his fifth longball of the year in the fifth to give Great Lakes the largest lead of the day.
Baker earned a no-decision with six innings in the books. He gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Cody Penny entered the game in relief for the seventh. Penny loaded the bases in the frame but got out of the jam.
Lake County loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh inning with a double and two walks. Manager Razor Shines made a move to the bullpen to bring in Thomas Taylor in relief of Brown. Taylor allowed a two-run double to second baseman Todd Hankins before earning the hook. Crayton Bare came in and gave up the homer to Martinez.
Brown took the loss, giving up three runs on three hits in five and two-thirds innings. Bare and Taylor were each charged with one run allowed.
Penny picked up the win with a scoreless inning. Jack Wagoner and Grant Sides each threw a scoreless to end the game. Sides picked up his fourth save of the year.
Right fielder Logan Vick and Hankins led the team with two hits each.
The Captains will take a quick three game roadtrip to Dayton beginning Wednesday night. RHP Robbie Aviles (3-3, 4.20) will make the start for the Captains and he will be opposed by RHP Sal Romano (6-8, 4.85) for the Dragons. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM from Fifth Third Field.
