DAYTON, OH- The Lake County Captains (21-24, 44-68) had a 2-0 lead after the top of the eighth inning but fell on a late three-run homerun in the bottom half of the eighth by left fielder Jesse WInker. The Dayton Dragons (25-21, 53-62) took the series opener by a score of 3-2.
Robbie Aviles and Sal Romano started the game and worked through the first two innings without allowing a run.
Captains left fielder Jorge Martinez launched his fifth homerun of the year in the third inning to give the Captains a 1-0 lead. Martinez has hit homers in back-to-back games.
Aviles was the first starter to leave the game after he pitched five shutout innings. He scattered three hits and one walk to go along with two strikeouts. DJ Brown entered for the sixth inning.
Romano gave up one run on seven hits in six innings for the Dragons. He walked one and fanned three as his only blemish was the homerun to Martinez. He turned the ball over to Wandy Peralta to begin the seventh.
Lake County added another run in the eighth inning. Centerfielder LeVon Washington walked to open the inning. Washington was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a single. Dayton made a pitching change to bring in Abel De Los Santos to face first baseman Joe Sever. De Los Santos walked Sever but ball four skipped away allowing Washington to score.
Peralta was charged with one run on two hits in one and one thirds innings of relief. De Los Santos earned the win with the final two outs of the eighth.
The Dragons took the late lead in the bottom of the eighth. A fielding error and a walk set the table for Winker. Winker sent his sixteenth long ball of the year to center field for the 3-2 lead.
Brown took the loss, with three runs (two earned) on four hits in four innings.
Alejandro Chacin pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his fourth save of the year.
The Captains outhit the Dragons 9-7 on Wednesday. Shortstop Dorssys Paulino, right fielder Logan Vick and third baseman Zack MacPhee each had two hit games.
Lake County and Dayton will face off in the middle game of the series on Thursday. The Captains will start RHP Felix Sterling (3-4, 5.00) and Dayton will counter with LHP Ismael Guillon (4-7, 5.95) First Pitch is at 7:00 PM from Fifth Third Field.
