8/10: Vick’s homer beats Hot Rods, 6-5

EASTLAKE, OH- The Lake County Captains (23-25, 46-69) took the opening game of a three game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (29-20, 67-50) on Saturday night by a final score of 6-5. The Captains used a homerun by right fielder Logan Vick in the bottom of the seventh inning after Bowling Green tied the game with a three run top of the seventh.

The Captains drew first blood in the second inning. The first two batters of the frame reached on a single and walk, respectively. Left fielder Jorge Martinez followed with a three-run homerun to left field. Martinez’s shot was his sixth of the year and third of the three run variety.

Bowling Green got a run back in the third inning on a RBI triple by designated hitter Luke Maile to score right fielder Joey Rickard.

With the bases-loaded and one out in the third inning, the Captains had the chance to blow the game open with Martinez at the plate. Martinez sent a ball to the third baseman Tyler Goeddel, could not field the ball cleanly, bringing home two runs and ending his starter’s night. Austin Pruitt was brought in to relieve lefty Stone Speer, who made his first start. Pruitt ended the inning with the final two outs.

Speer gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits in two and one third innings. He walked five and did not strike out a batter,

Captains’ starter and southpaw Ryan Merritt exited after his normal three innings of work. Merritt allowed one run on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Luis Morel came in for his usual piggyback with Merritt.

The Hot Rods began to come back with a run in the sixth inning. Second baseman Thomas Coyle lined a one-out single to left field. After a strikeout, left fielder Marty Gantt doubled Coyle home for a 5-2 deficit.

The wheels came off for Morel in the seventh, allowing Bowling Green to tie the game. Shortstop Brandon Martin led off with a walk and center fielder Andrew Toles followed with a double. Rickard scored Martin with a RBI double to right field. Maile drove in his second run of the night with a groundout. Catcher Justin O’Conner tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Vick opened the bottom half of the seventh inning with his fifth longball of the year. Vick hit the game-winning homer to dead center field, over 400 feet from home plate.
Pruitt took the loss, giving up the homerun in four innings of relief work. He walked one and struck out three. Marcus Jensen threw one and two thirds innings of hitless baseball.
Morel earned his fourth win of the year, after he allowed four runs on six hits in four and two thirds innings. He gave up two walks and five strikeouts. Jack Wagoner escaped a jam in the eighth inning to pick up his first save.
The Captains were outhit 12-6 on the night while improving to 12-52 when being outhit. Vick was the only Captain to have a multi-hit game, 26th and 20th two-hit game. Martinez added four RBI’s to move his total to 41.
Lake County and Bowling Green will continue the series on Sunday. The Captains will start RHP Josh Tomlin (0-0, 0.00) and the Hot Rods will counter with LHP Blake Snell (3-7, 4.00). First Pitch is scheduled for 1:30 PM at Classic Park.
