EASTLAKE, OH- The Lake County Captains (24-25, 47-69) jumped out an early 6-0 lead before defeating the Bowling Green Hot Rods (29-21, 67-51) 6-3 on Sunday afternoon. in front of 3,703 paying customers at Classic Park. The Captains have won two straight and four of their last six. They are 4.5 games out of the second wild card with 21 games remaining.
Right-hander Josh Tomlin made his made his third rehab appearance for the Captains as he took on lefty Blake Snell for the Hot Rods.
Tomlin ran into a jam in the second inning. With one out, Tomlin allowed a single and then third baseman Zack MacPhee followed with a fielding error. A double steal moved both runners into scoring position. Back-to-back called third strikes ended the threat for the big-leaguer.
Lake County used another big inning to take an early lead. A double, walk and single loaded the bases with one out. Snell walked second baseman Yhoxian Medina and hit center fielder LeVon Washington with a pitch to score two runs. Shortstop Dorssys Paulino followed with a two-run double to left field. The Captains led 4-0 after two innings.
Tomlin exited the game after two and one third innings of work. He gave up one hit and struck out three. Dylan Baker relieved Tomlin with the final two outs of the third.
The Captains added two more runs in the third. First baseman Joe Sever doubled home right fielder Logan Vick, who led off with a walk. A fly ball moved Sever to third and a wild pitch from Snell scored Sever for a 6-0 lead.
Snell pitched into the fifth before departing after an out, a walk and a single. Matthew Spann came into a two on, one out jam. He induced a fielder’s choice and a strikeout to end the threat.
Snell lost his eighth game after he gave up six runs on five hits and five walks in four and one third innings. He struck out five and also hit a batter.
The Hot Rods broke through for two runs against Baker. Catcher Luke Maile and designated hitter Thomas Coyle both had RBI singles in the frame.
Grant Sides took over for Baker with two outs in the eighth inning. Baker won his seventh game and first game since July 5th with two runs allowed on five hits in five and two thirds innings. He walked three and struck out four.
Spann completed two and two thirds innings of scoreless relief before he turned the ball over to Jose Molina. Molina held the Captains scoreless in the eighth.
Sides gave up his first earned run since July 20th in the ninth inning. First baseman Patrick Leonard lined an one-out double to right field. Two batters later, center fielder Andrew Toles singled home Leonard for the final score of 6-3.
Sides allowed one run on two hits in one and one third innings of relief.
For the second straight game, the Captains were outhit by their opponents and still won the game. Sever and catcher Jeremy Lucas led the way with two hits each.
Lake County and Bowling Green will face off in the final game of the series on Monday before Tuesday’s scheduled off day. The Captains will start RHP Robbie Aviles (3-3, 3.78) and the Hot Rods will counter with LHP Kevin Brandt (0-0, 0.00). First Pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Classic Park.
