8/15: Captains win fifth straight, 1-0

EASTLAKE, OH-The Lake County Captains (27-25, 50-69) used great pitching by their staff as they made an early run stick as they defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks (31-22, 75-47) 1-0 on Thursday night. With the win, the Captains have won five straight as they are 3.5 games out of the wildcard spot and four games out of the division.

The Captains sent lefty Ryan Merritt to the mound to face Silver Hawks RHP Braden Shipley. Shipley was the Diamondbacks’ first round draft pick in the 2013 draft. Shipley was making his Low-A debut.

Shortstop Dorssys Paulino took Shipley deep as the second batter of the game. Paulino’s fifth homer of the year was the only run in the game back in the first inning.

Merritt worked his three scoreless innings before turning it over to Luis Morel. Merritt allowed two hits and struck out two. Morel pitched five and two-thirds innings of scoreless ball to earn his fifth win of the year. He scattered two hits and two walks along with six strikeouts.

Shipley was just as impressive but unfortunately took the loss. He gave up the one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Brad Allen finished the game with three scoreless frames and four strikeouts.

Jack Wagoner struck out the last batter of the game with a runner on second base to pick up his second save of the year.

The teams only had four hits each on Thursday. Paulino had the only extra-base hit as the other three hits were singles.

The Captains will look to extend their winning streak to six on Friday night. The Captains will send RHP Dylan Baker (7-6, 3.95) to the mound as he will be opposed by RHP Rob Coe (3-1, 3.25) for the Silver Hawks. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Classic Park.
