8/16: Captains dropped by eighth inning rally

EASTLAKE, OH- The Lake County Captains (27-26, 50-70) were on their way to a sixth straight win on Friday night. But a four-run eighth inning gave the South Bend Silver Hawks (32-22, 76-47) a 4-3 win in front of a sellout crowd of 7,164 people at Classic Park. The loss snapped the Captains five game winning streak.

Right-hander Dylan Baker started the game for the Captains as he took on right-hander Rob Coe for the Silver Hawks.

The Captains scored first for the third straight game with two runs in the third inning. After a quick out, center fielder LeVon Washington and second baseman Yhoxian Medina lined back-to-back singled to right field. Catcher Jeremy Lucas put a RBI double into the right field corner to plate Washington and move Paulino to third. First baseman Joe Sever grounded to third base, and the third baseman Brandon Drury threw home to get Paulino. The throw was offline as Paulino scored.

Lake County used another error to score a run in the fourth. Right fielder Jorge Martinez opened the frame with a double. Left fielder Cody Ferrell followed with a single to center field. The center fielder could field the ball cleanly as Martinez scored from third.

Baker scattered two hits and one walk to go along with seven strikeouts for six shutout innings. Jimmy Stokes entered for the seventh.

Coe allowed two earned runs (three total) on eight hits. He did not walk a batter and fanned six batters. He turned the ball over to Thomas Brendel for the seventh.

The Silver Hawks used a four-run eighth inning against three Captains pitchers to take a 4-3 lead. Stokes gave up two one-out singles before making way for southpaw Anderson Polanco. Polanco’s first batter singled to load the bases before the lefty walked in two runs. Manager Scooter Tucker brought in the closer Grant Sides to attempt to extinguish the threat. Drury grounded into a possible double play, but Medina threw the ball away, allowing two more runs to score.

Stokes was charged with two runs on three hits in one and one third innings. Polanco took the loss, with two runs (one earned) given up on one hit and two walks. He did not record an out with the three batters he faced.

Brendel picked up his fifth win with a scoreless inning. Daniel Gibson worked around two hits to record a scoreless eighth while Jimmie Sherfy struck out the side in the ninth for his first save.

Sides struck out two in his one and two thirds innings of work.

Lake County outhit the Silver Hawks 10-6 in the loss. Washington and Paulino each had two hits with six other players recording a hit.

The Captains will take a four game road trip to Lansing, Michigan to face the Lansing Lugnuts. RHP Robbie Aviles (3-3, 3.70) will start for the Captains as he will take on RHP Kendall Graveman (0-1, 3.98) for the Lugnuts. First pitch from Cooley Law School Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
