LANSING, MI- The Lake County Captains (29-27, 52-71) scored nine unanswered runs after falling behind the Lansing Lugnuts (23-34, 55-71) early. The Lugnuts still lead the season series 8-9.
The Lugnuts jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning off of Captains’ starter Luis Dejesus. Shortstop Emilio Guerrero walked and stole second base before the second out of the inning. Designated hitter Kevin Patterson lifted a fly ball to right field that right fielderJorge Martinez dropped, allowing Guerrero to score. Patterson scored when center fielder LeVon Washington dropped a fly ball off the ball of first baseman Jordan Leyland. Catcher Santiago Nessy finished the scoring with a RBI single to center field.
Lake County started the comeback with catcher Eric Haase’s fourteenth homerun of the year in the fourth inning. Haase’s solo shot was his seventh on the road and it made the score 3-1.
The Captains took the lead with a three-run fifth inning. First baseman Leo Castillo led off the inning with his fifth homerun of the year. Washington doubled and scored on a RBI double by Haase. Third baseman Joe Seversingled home Haase to take a 4-3 lead.
In the sixth, three more Captains runs crossed the plate to open the lead to four at 7-3. Left fielder Cody Ferrellsingled and scored on Martinez’s RBI triple. Washington followed with a RBI single to end the night of Lansing starter Ben White. Haase greeted Chad Girodo with a RBI single to plate Washington.
White took the loss, allowing seven runs on 13 hits in five and one third innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out two.
Dejesus won his sixth game of the year with five innings. He gave up three runs (none earned) on three hits and two walks. Southpaw Anderson Polanco entered for the sixth inning. Polanco struck out five in three scoreless innings.
Girondo threw two and two thirds scoreless frames scattering two hits. Griffin Murphy entered for the ninth inning.
The Captains scored two more runs off of Murphy in the ninth. A Zack MacPhee RBI double and Ferrell RBI single closed the scoring at 9-3. Murphy was charged with one earned run in the inning.
Kyle Blair made his 2013 Captains debut with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Captains outhit the Lugnuts 17-4 in the game. Haase led the way with a four-hit game while Ferrell had three hits. Every starter had at least one hit.
The four game series will come to a close on Tuesday night. Lake County has not announced a starter and Lansing will start LHP Daniel Norris (0-1, 3.98). First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
