8/28: Lugnuts beat up on Captains 11-2

EASTLAKE, OH- The Lansing Lugnuts (26-39, 58-76) used a six-run second inning en route to a 11-2 win over the Lake County Captains (30-35, 53-80) on Wednesday night. The Captains have lost four straight and eight of the last 10 games.

Lansing touched Captains starter Robbie Aviles for six runs in the second inning. One run scored on a fielding error and shortstop Jason Leblebijian plated a run with a RBI single. Center fielder Dalton Pompey had the big blow, a grand slam to right field.

The Captains answered back with a RBI single by left fielder Nick Hamilton in the bottom of the second.

The Lugnuts loaded the bases with two outs in the third inning before third baseman Kellen Sweeney singled home two runners to pad the lead at 8-1.

Aviles was finished after three innings with eight earned runs charged to him on eight hits. James Stokes followed with two scoreless innings.

Cody Penny entered in the sixth inning and gave up a RBI single to left fielder Dwight Smith.

Lansing starter Kendall Graveman earned his first professional win as he allowed one run on six hits in five innings. Kramer Champlin pitched two scoreless frames.

Right fielder Chris Hawkins walked and moved to third on a ground-rule double by Pompey. Second baseman Christian Lopes laced a two-run single to left field to give the Lugnuts a 11-1 lead in the seventh.

Penny was tagged for three runs on four hits in three innings of work. He walked two and struck out two.

Grant Sides threw a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout.

The Captains were on their way to their worst defeat of the season until catcher Richard Stock hit his eighth homer of the year off of Tucker Donahue to close the scoring at 11-2.

Manager Scooter Tucker had one sentence to sum up the contents of the game on Wednesday, “We dug ourselves a hole that we could not get out of.”

Lake County was outhit 12-11 but left seven men on base. Right fielder Cody Ferrell led the way with three hits and center fielder LeVon Washington, Stock and Hamilton all had two-hit games.

The Captains and Lugnuts will continue the three-game set on Thursday night. RHP D.J. Brown (2-4, 2.79) will make his second professional start and twenty-seventh appearance for Lake County. Lansing will counter with RHP Ben White (8-8, 4.06).
