Indians Offseason Update for 11/14

As I have wanted to do in the last few weeks but never got around to it. Here is an update for the Indians minor league players spending the offseason playing in leagues around the world through last night.

I hope to give another update in about two weeks with a wrapup of the AFL as well as a deeper look into other leagues playing into December.

Players that are doing well:

Jesus Aguilar: .319 (36-113) AVG/.376 OBP/.566 SLG in 28 games, 8 HR, 26 RBI, 11:20 BB:K

  • Aguilar has cooled down a tad from his hot start in the winter league. After last night, Aguilar is hitting .220 with a .646 OPS over the last ten games. Aguilar may be destined for Columbus next year but we will see what the brass decides to do. If he can cut down on the strikeouts, he can become a great hitter for this organization.

Erik Gonzalez: .392 (29-74) AVG/.416 OBP/.500 SLG in 20 games, 7 RBI, 2:18 BB:K

  • Gonzalez was, at one time, Lake County’s best player in 2013. This fall, he is showing that in the Dominican Winter League. If he can develop better plate discipline, he will become an even better player. He could be a star to watch for the Carolina Mudcats in 2014.

Tyler Naquin: .351 (39-111) AVG/.413 OBP/.432 SLG in 26 games, 18 RBI, 11:16 BB:K

  • He has shined in the AFL with some of the top prospects in the minors. If he is able to coax more walks, it will only add to his game.

Jose Ramirez: .284 (21-74)/.321 OBP/.405 SLG in 18 games, 6 RBI, 2:13 BB:K

  • Ramirez followed up his time in the majors with a good showing thus far in the winter league. The only concerning thing is his strikeouts, not usual for him as he had a 1:1 ratio in Akron.

Joe Wendle: .298 (17-57)/.364 OBP/.491 SLG in 15 games, 12 RBI, 6:10 BB:K

  • Wendle has performed well in the AFL after having a great season at Carolina despite his injury. He could have a another good season in Akron. The walk:strikeout ratio is a good sign for him.

Elvis Araujo: 1.93 ERA in 6 games (4.2 IP)

  • The main thing that should come out of this is that he hopefully is now healthy.

Shawn Armstrong: 1.59 ERA in 10 games (11.1 IP), 10 BB, 16 K

  • Armstrong had some troubles throughout the season last year and he could be making up for it this time around. He has been a great tool in the bullpen for Surprise this fall.

Bryan Price: 2.12 ERA in 13 games (17 IP), 4 SV, 18 K

  • Price had an awesome year between Columbus and Akron in 2013 and he has continued to show excellence in the winter league. It remains to be seen if he is called upon for the big league pen later in 2014.
