4/10: LumberKings crush Captains 12-2

CLINTON, IA – The Clinton LumberKings (4-3) roughed up the Lake County Captains (4-3) pitching staff to the tune of 12 runs on 14 hits to take the series finale and rubber match on Thursday night. The Lumberkings won the game in a landslide 12-2.

Clinton opened the game with a two-run first inning off of Captains starter Dace Kime.

Centerfielder Ian Miller led off the game with a walk, advanced to second on a failed pickoff move and to third on a single. Shortstop Jack Reinheimer grounded into a 6-3 double play, plating Miller. Right fielder Austin Wilson drilled his first homerun of the year to center field to open the lead to 2-0.

The LumberKings continued to pound the ball in the third inning as they scored three more runs. The big blow was a three-run homerun by left baseman Tyler O’Neill.

LumberKings’ starter Eddie Campbell kept the Captains off the board despite allowing four hits and four walks in three and one third innings. Blake Holovach entered the game and retired the final two batters of the inning.

With a 4-0 lead in the third inning, the LumberKings added four more runs in the fourth. The first two batters reached on singles, and then Kime threw the ball away on a fielder’s choice, bringing home one run.

Captains’ manager Mark Budzinski pulled Kime and brought in Alexis Paredes to try to limit the damage. Zach Shank welcomed Paredes with a two-run double to left field. Wilson struck again with a RBI single to cap the scoring for the inning.

Kime took the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits, two walks and three strikeouts in three innings of play.

The Captains broke up the shutout with a run in the sixth inning. Shortstop Dorssys Paulino plated a run with a RBI double.

Holovach picked up the win after giving up one run in two and two thirds innings. He made way for Emilio Pagan in the seventh. Pagan earned a three inning save with one run allowed.

Catcher Eric Haase opened the frame with a double and he scored on a RBI single by first baseman Nellie Rodriguez. The Captains pushed the lead to 9-2 heading into the seventh inning stretch.

Paredes exited the game after surrendering one run in three innings. Ben Heller took the ball and was hit hard immediately. Clinton loaded the bases with two hits and a walk. All three runs scored on a two-run double by third baseman Martin Peguero and a groundout by Miller. Heller was charged with three runs in one inning of work.

Southpaw Wander Beras finished the game with a scoreless eighth.

Despite only two runs, the Captains had ten hits in the game including seven doubles. Haase, Rodriguez and left fielder Brian Ruiz all had two hits each.

The Captains will travel back east to face the Kane County Cougars in Geneva, Illinois. The series will open at 7:05 PM ET on Friday. RHP Caleb Hamrick (0-0, 11.25) will start for the Captains and he will be opposed by RHP Daury Torrez (0-0, 1.80).
