4/22: Captains fall 6-1 to Lugnuts, drop fourth straight

LANSING, MI – The Lansing Lugnuts (6-11) jumped ahead early in the game and rode a spectacular pitching performance by Jeremy Gabryszwski in a 6-1 win over the Lake County Captains (5-13) on Tuesday night. The Captains have dropped four straight games and have lost nine of the last ten games.

Captains’ starter Caleb Hamrick and Gabryszwski traded zeroes for the first two and a half innings before the Lugnuts struck first in the third inning.

Lansing had four base hits in the third off of Hamrick including three doubles. The big blows in the inning were a RBI double by second baseman Jason Leblebijian and a two-run double by first baseman Matt Dean. The Lugnuts had a 3-0 lead after three innings. The Captains have allowed 22 runs in the third inning, the most in any inning this season, so far.

Lansing loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth inning by drawing two singles and a walk. Center fielder D.J. Davis cleared the bags with a three-run double to the left field gap. Hamrick retired the final batter of the frame, but the damage was already done and the Captains found themselves on the short end of a 6-0 score.

Hamrick took the loss after allowing six earned runs in four innings on eight hits. Half of the hits allowed were extra base hits. He walked one and fanned two. Hamrick’s piggyback partner, Jordan Milbrath entered the game in the fifth inning.

With the team up 6-0, Gabryszwski dodged a couple of hits throughout the first seven innings of the game to keep the opposition scoreless. The Captains struck with their first run of the game in the eighth inning.

Second baseman Claudio Bautista led off the inning with a triple to right field. Left fielder Brian Ruiz drove in Bautista with a single, his first RBI of the year.

Gabryszwski gave up one run on six hits in eight innings of work. He did not walk a batter, and struck out six Captains batters.

Jimmy Cordero and Alonzo Gonzalez combined to strike out the side, despite, both walking one Captain batter each in the ninth inning.

Milbrath was outstanding in relief in the losing effort. He allowed only two baserunners (one hit and one walk) in four innings of relief work, while striking out six batters.

Ruiz was the only Captain to have a multi-hit game, recording two hits, and recorded the only Lake County RBI in the game.

The Captains and Lugnuts will continue the series on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. RHP Adam Plutko (0-0, 2.84) will pitch for the visitors against RHP Adonys Cardona (0-2, 5.63) for Lansing. First pitch is at 7:05 PM ET.
