4/25: Captains outdueled, fall 1-0 to Silver Hawks, skid reaches seven

SOUTH BEND, IN – The Lake County Captains (5-16) were held without a hit for the first six and two thirds innings of the game by South Bend Silver Hawks (13-8) starter Blake Perry as South Bend took game one of the series 1-0 on Friday night. Despite the improved pitching, the Captains have dropped seven straight games.

Perry and Captains southpaw Luis Lugo traded zeroes through six innings before Lugo exited the game. Lugo scattered two hits and one walk through six innings with six strikeouts.

Perry pitched into the seventh inning before allowing a walk and a two-out single to designated hitter Anthony Santander. Santander’s single was the first Lake County hit on the night. Silver Hawks manager Mark Haley made the move to the bullpen to bring Silvino Bracho. Bracho walked a batter to load the bases with two outs. Bracho escaped the inning with the game still scoreless.

Perry pitched six and two thirds innings with one hit, three walks and six strikeouts to earn a no-decision.

Robbie Aviles entered for relief in the seventh inning. Aviles worked around two singles to get through the eighth scoreless before the Silver Hawks scored the first, and only, run of the game.  Right fielder Zach Esquerra was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Paul Hendrix. South Bend led 1-0 after eight.

Bracho made way to J.R. Bradley in the ninth after he threw one and one third innings of scoreless ball to get the win. Bradley struck out the side in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.

Aviles was hung with the tough loss allowing one unearned run in two innings.

The Captains and Silver Hawks will continue the three-game series on Saturday night. Captains RHP Dace Kime (0-3, 11.30) will face Silver Hawks RHP Ben Eckels (1-2, 8.49) in the second game. First pitch from Four Winds Field at Stanley Coveleski Stadium is at 7:05 PM.
