FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Fort Wayne TinCaps (17-21) sent nine men to the plate in the third inning to turn a 4-1 deficit into a 6-4 lead in a rain-shortened game against the Lake County Captains (11-28) Wednesday afternoon. The final score in eight innings was 8-6.
The Captains started things off on the right foot in the first inning. Center fielder Clint Frazier singled and stole second base before scoring on a RBI single by first baseman Nellie Rodriguez. CatcherRichard Stock drove in a second run with a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.
The home team answered back in their first at bat. Third basemanDustin Peterson singled, moved to second on a single, to third on a throwing error and scored on a RBI single by designated hitter Dane Phillips.
In the second inning, Lake County upped the lead to three with two more runs. Left fielder Brian Ruiz doubled to right field to begin the inning. Three batters later, second baseman Paul Hendrix singled home Ruiz. TinCaps starter Coby Cowgill then walked three straight batters to plate the second run of the frame.
Cowgill was charged with four runs on three hits and six walks in two innings of work. He gave way to Justin Livengood for the third inning.
Fort Wayne rallied back with the second five-run third inning of the series. Center fielder Mallex Smith singled, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Fort Wayne strung together three straight singles including a RBI knock for right fielder Franmil Reyes. First baseman Jake Bauers placed a ground-rule double down the left field line to plate two more runners and cut the lead to one. Catcher Ryan Miller grounded out to the mound and, after the out was made, Rodriguez threw the ball into the first row of the stands trying to throw out the runner going to third. Two runs scored on the error.
Stock drove in his second run of the game with a RBI single in the fourth inning to cut the Fort Wayne lead to 6-5.
Fort Wayne answered back with a run in the bottom of the fourth. After a one out double and single, a wild pitch by Captains’ starter Adam Plutko plated the runner from third.
Livengood allowed one run in two innings with three hits given up. Tayron Guerrero followed with two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win.
Plutko took the loss, after giving up seven runs on eleven hits over four innings. Southpaw Wander Beras entered the game and gave up a run in the fifth.
The Captains completed the scoring at 8-6 with a RBI double by Hendrix in the eighth inning against reliever Eric Yardley.
Following the completion of the eighth inning, the skies opened up and drenched the field with water. After a 33-minute delay, the game was called.
The Captains had nine hits in the game, including three players with multi-hit games. Hendrix, Rodriguez and Ruiz all had two hits in the game.
The Captains are scheduled to travel back to Comstock Park, Mich., to take on the West Michigan Whitecaps on Thursday. RHP Mitch Brown (0-5, 5.64) looks for his first win of the year as he faces LHP Kevin Ziomek (2-3, 1.38). First pitch is for 6:35 p.m.
