5/22: Hot Rods blank Captains 5-0

BOWLING GREEN, KY – The Lake County Captains (16-31) could not generate any offense and struck out fifteen times as they were shutout for the sixth time in 2014 by the Bowling Green Hot Rods (21-25) 5-0 on Thursday night. The loss snapped Lake County’s three-game winning streak and put the Captains fifteen games below .500 on the season.

Dace Kime started for the Captains as he looked for his first win of the season. Jaime Schultz made his second start for the Hot Rods.

The Hot Rods took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as that would be the only damage Kime would have. Left fielder Granden Goetzman reached on an infield single, and then stole second base. He came home to score following two groundouts.

Kime was the tough-luck loser in the game as he allowed one run on one hit in five innings of work. He did not walk a batter and struck out three. Southpaw Luis Lugo entered for the sixth inning.

On the home side, Schultz was even more efficient than Kime. Schultz gave up no runs, two hits and three walks in five and two thirds innings. Schultz struck out a career-high twelve batters before leaving the game.  Ian Kendall worked around a walk to end the sixth with a 1-0 lead.

The Hot Rods blew the game open with a four-run seventh inning. Third baseman Tyler Young singled, and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Lugo. Catcher Armando Araiza singled home Young. Goetzman followed with a single to move the runner to second. Right fielder Ariel Soriano doubled home both runners to make it a 4-0 game with no outs. Soriano crossed the plate on an infield single off the glove of Lugo by shortstop Juniel Querecuto.

Lugo gave up four runs on six hits in three innings. He walked one and fanned five batters.

Kendall worked around four walks in two and one third innings of relief to keep the Captains off the board. Colton Reavis pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Bowling Green.

The Captains only managed three hits on the night and designated hitter Anthony Santander had two of the three hits. Second baseman Claudio Bautista added the third in the ninth. Shortstop Paul Hendrix walked to extend his on-base streak to 29 games.

The Captains and the Hot Rods will continue the three-game series on Friday night. RHP Jordan Milbrath (1-4, 2.79) will start for the Captains and he will be opposed by LHP Blake Snell (2-2, 3.16) for the Hot Rods. First pitch is at 8:05 PM ET.
