5/27: Fink, Captains walk off to avoid sweep by Loons, 3-2 in 10

EASTLAKE, OH – The Lake County Captains (18-34) broke a seven inning scoreless streak with a run in the tenth inning to avoid the sweep in the series finale on Tuesday night. The Captains defeated the Great Lakes Loons (25-27) 3-2 in ten innings courtesy of a RBI single by third baseman Grant Fink.

Great Lakes opened a 2-0 lead in the second inning against Captains’ starter Dace Kime. Third baseman Paul Hoenecke led off with a walk and was erased on a fielder’s choice off the bat of designated hitter Joey Curletta. On the relay throw to first, second baseman Claudio Bautista sent the throw into the dugout. Curletta moved to second on the error. Another fielder’s choice following a walk put runners on the corners with two outs. Right fielder Alex Santana, who came off the DL Tuesday for Great Lakes, sent a double down the left field line to plate both runners. The RBI double was the only hit allowed by Kime in his outing.

In the bottom half of the second, first baseman Nellie Rodriguez opened the frame with a single. The next batter, catcher Eric Haase tied the game with a two-run homer to the lawn in left field. Haase’s tenth homerun of the year knotted the score at two.

Kime allowed two runs on one hit and three walks in five innings. He struck out one batter to follow up his one run outing in his last start. His piggyback partner, southpaw Luis Lugo, entered into a tie game for the sixth.

Jonathan Martinez gave up two runs on four hits in six innings for the Loons. He made way for Jordan Hershiser, the son of Orel Hershiser, in the seventh. Hershiser followed with two scoreless innings of relief work.

Lugo held the Loons scoreless and hitless across five innings. Lugo walked three with three strikeouts to keep the game tied at two and improve to 2-4 on the year.

Jacob Rhame entered in the game and threw a scoreless ninth before losing the game in the tenth. Haase singled to begin the tenth frame and moved to second on a balk. Following a strikeout, Fink received a ceremonial beating in center field after a RBI single up the middle won the game.

The Captains improved to 5-2 in extra inning games and walked-off for the fifth time this season.

Lake County outhit the Loons 6-1 in the series finale. Haase and right fielder Brian Ruiz each had two hits in the game.

The Captains will open a three-game set with the South Bend Silver Hawks on Wednesday night.  The Captains will start RHP Jordan Milbrath (1-4, 2.68) and the Hawks will counter with RHP Sean Furney (0-1, 8.36). First Pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM from Classic Park.
