6/11: Lake County Captains stifled by South Bend Silver Hawks, 5-3

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Blake Perry held the Lake County Captains (24-42) without a hit through six innings as the South Bend Silver Hawks (39-26) went wire-to-wire in a 5-3 win over the Lake County Captains on Wednesday night.

With the win, South Bend clinched a playoff berth and secured a series win.

South Bend jumped out in front in their first at-bat against Captains’ starter Jordan Milbrath. Centerfielder Breland Almadova walked with one out and scored on a RBI triple by first baseman Daniel Palka.

The Silver Hawks added another run in the second inning to double the lead to two. With runners on first and second and no outs, designated hitter Marty Herum singled home the runner from second. South Bend loaded the bases in the inning but could not score another run.

Right fielder Stryker Trahan hit his eighth home run of the season in the third inning, giving the home team a three-run lead.

In the fifth inning, South Bend third baseman George Roberts opened the inning with a triple to center field. Two batters later, second baseman Jamie Westbrook drove home Roberts with a sacrifice fly to center field. South Bend held a 4-0 lead after five innings.

Over the first six innings, Perry only allowed one walk and one hit batter with no hits. On April 26, Perry no-hit the Captains over 6.2 innings before leaving the game. In his first start off the disabled list, Perry walked one and struck out six.

Milbrath allowed four runs on five hits in five innings of work. He fell to 1-8 on the year. He walked four batters and fanned one. Justin Brantley made his professional debut in the sixth inning.

After Perry left the game in the seventh, shortstop Paul Hendrix broke up the no-hitter with one out against Austin Platt. Left fielder Dorssys Paulino walked to put two runners on with two outs. Designated hitter Torsten Bosstripled home both runners to cut the lead in half. Third baseman Grant Fink walked before Platt exited the game.

Jose Jose entered and gave up a RBI single to catcher Richard Stock, pulling the Captains within one run.

Platt was charged with three runs allowed on two hits and two walks in two thirds innings of work.

In the bottom of the seventh, South Bend added an insurance run to cap the scoring at 5-3. Catcher Michael Perezhomered to right field, for his fourth round-tripper of the year.

Brantley allowed one run on two hits in two innings. He walked one and struck out one before making way for Trevor Frank in the eighth. Frank worked around a runner at third to keep the Silver Hawks off the board.

Jose and Silvino Bracho held the Captains scoreless over two and one third innings of relief. Bracho earned his eleventh save of the year.

The Captains only managed three hits in the game, including one extra-base hit.

The Captains are set to look to avoid the sweep on Thursday night at Four Winds Field. Lake County is scheduled to send righty Robbie Aviles (1-1, 1.70 ERA) to the mound while righty John Omahen (1-1, 1.93 ERA) is set to take the ball for South Bend. First pitch is at 7:05 PM.
