7/19: Lake County blanked in loss to Quad Cities, 6-0

DAVENPORT, IA – The Quad Cities River Bandits (13-15, 48-49) took advantage of a wild fifth inning to add some insurance runs and the pitching staff held the Lake County Captains (15-13, 42-56) to only three hits. Quad Cities took the series opener 6-0 on Saturday night.

Quad Cities got on the board first in the first with a run against Captains starter Mitch Brown. The first three batters loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. Left fielder Ronnie Mitchell grounded out to second base, scoring the game’s first run.

In the fifth, things got ugly for the Captains. Nine batters stepped to the plate against three different pitchers. Thomas Lindauer led off with a single and James Ramsay tried to sacrifice Lindauer to second. On the bunt, Brown made a throwing error to first, allowing Ramsay to reach. The next batter sacrificed both runners into scoring position before Brown struck out the next batter.

Captains manager Mark Budzinski made the call to the pen in order to bring in Alexis Paredes. Paredes entered and walked Mitchell to load the bases. Paredes had trouble finding the strike zone as he walked the next three batters, Chase McDonaldBrian Holberton, and Marc Wik, scoring three runs in the process. 

Paredes’s night was over as Budzinski brought in reliever Justin Garcia. Garcia struck out the final batter but the damage was done and it was a 4-0 Quad Cities lead.

Brown took the loss, after allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk in four and two third innings. He struck out seven to tie a season-high and hit two batters. Paredes walked four ,allowed a run and did not retire a batter.

In the sixth, Ramsay tripled with one out to right field. Two batters later, third baseman J.D. Davis scored Ramsay with a sacrifice fly to center field to make the lead 5-0.

On the home side, Michael Feliz improved to 6-2 with seven shutout innings of three-hit ball. He walked three but fanned eight in the game.

Garcia gave up one run on one hit and one walk in one and one third innings of work. He was replaced by Justin Brantley in the seventh inning.

The first batter in the seventh, McDonald took Brantley deep to center field for his eighth homerun of the year, giving the River Bandits a 6-0 lead and that was the final score.

Brantley surrendered a run on two hits in two innings of work.

Tyler Brunnemann completed the shutout for Quad Cities with two perfect innings and three strikeouts.

Despite only having three hits, two of the hits were doubles by catcher Eric Haase and left fielder Dorssys Paulino. First baseman Nellie Rodriguez singled as well.

The Captains will look to break their four game slide as they return to action against the River Bandits. RHP Jordan Milbrath (3-9, 3.38) will start for the Captains against RHP Edison Frias (5-5, 6.14) for Quad Cities. First pitch is at 6:00 PM Eastern Time.
