BOWLING GREEN, Ky. –– The Lake County Captains (29-27, 56-70) jumped out to a early lead in the first inning and rode a outstanding performance by the pitching staff to take the second game of the series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (26-31, 58-68) by a final score of 3-0.
The Captains took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning via the longball. After a single and a caught stealing, third baseman Paul Hendrix singled to extend the inning. The next batter, first baseman Nellie Rodriguez took a pitch from right-hander German Marquez over the left center field wall. Rodriguez now has a team-leading 20 homeruns and 71 runs batted in.
With the lead already in hand, southpaw Anderson Polanco took to the mound and dominated the competition. Polanco went four plus innings without allowing a hit before third baseman Pat Blair reached on an infield single. Bowling Green had runners at second and third with one out but they could not score a run.
Marquez took the loss after allowing the homerun to Rodriguez. He gave up two runs on five hits in five innings. He struck out seven before giving way to Josh Kimborowicz in the sixth.
Polanco pitched into the sixth inning when fellow lefty Wander Beras entered in relief with one on and one out. Beras struck out the final two batters to keep it a 2-0 lead after six.
Polanco improved to 3-0 on the year with five and one third innings of one-hit ball. He walked one batter and fanned six. Covering the last three starts, Polanco now has a 13.1 inning scoreless streak.
Right fielder Mike Papi launched his third homer of the year to open the seventh inning. The Captains added an insurance run to make the score 3-0.
Beras threw one and two thirds innings of perfect baseball with six strikeouts. Carlos Melo pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save of the year. Captains pitching retired the final 12 batters of the game en route to a one-hit shutout.
Kimborowicz surrendered one run in three innings of work. D.J. Slaton tossed a scoreless ninth despite two walks.
Lake County had six hits in the game. Catcher Richard Stock had two hits, including a double and a triple. The homeruns by Rodriguez and Papi give the Captains 108 on the year.
The Captains will look for a series win against Bowling Green on Wednesday night. Captains RHP Dace Kime (6-13, 5.09 ERA) will start against Hot Rods LHP Ben Griset (2-6, 4.24 ERA). First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m.
